about

commentary from Dr John Coulter Director of Teaching and Learning Coordinator of Sonic Arts Programme at Auckland University -

‘Bardo at once presents an intriguing pallet of highly musical sounds inherently related to the instrument from whence they came. The ear is drawn to spectrally rich transformations and variants of locally produced acoustic sounds that are heavily supported with gestural affordances and visual fixity. The ambiguity between acoustic and electroacoustic materials is allocentrically fascinating, and this takes some time to digest. By contrast, various sounds are transformed/transported to field relationships through a process of ADSR extension. Local gesture is converted to field texture. These sounds operate in an accompanying capacity to the hierarchically prime materials already discussed.
The physical properties of the instrument itself allow for these rich relationships to develop. There is a natural correlation between the way the instrument is played acoustically, and the data that is gleaned from those gestures.
The software patches are robust, and highly functional – evidencing an extended period of testing and refining. In particular, you are to be commended for your focus and commitment to achieving autocentrically arresting and emotionally impacting musical sounds in situations that are both technically demanding, and subject to the rigours of live performance.
The accompanying report evidences a high-level understanding of the technical and language concerns that inform the domain of performance-based sonic art. The paper could very well be developed further for presentation at an international conference, or published as is on line. I believe others would find its content extremely valuable.
Overall, a project of outstanding quality that in the way described achieves exemplary status. Bravo’ - Dr John Coulter
